A drinker at home

Many people find it quite difficult  to live with someone who drinks too much alcohol. For them we have some tips on how to cope:

  • Learn to stand back a bit. One can’t control another’s drinking.
  • Avoid an argument with someone who has been drinking – no fruitful discussions are  possible at this time and no decisions can be made. Wait until the person is sober again.
  • Avoid threats unless you intend to carry them through.
  • Do not focus on the drinker to the detriment of other family members.
  • Find someone you can trust to talk to; you may want to  check the local services available.
  • There might be professional help available – ask a health professional or check the availability of help-lines.
  • Don’t expect miracles if the drinker agrees to treatment. Relapse is part of the cycle of hazardous or harmful use of alcohol and treatment. You will need some patience.
